FAQ'S Why Shared Housing?
In the midst of a global recession, there are untold numbers of individuals and families who have had the finances drastically reduced and their credit scores severely impacted. Housing values have plummeted, yet rental housing rates have held or even risen.
Washington Home Share is a newly formed grassroots resource to assist families and individuals with affordable shared housing solutions. Pooling financial resources allows families to afford housing solutions that would otherwise be unattainable. Lack of excellent credit will not prevent you from joining Washington Home Share (WHS) . If you can appreciate and honor the worth of every individual within your Home Share Group, have a regular source of income, share the community goals of maintaining a safe, drug-free, peaceful and supportive environment you can become a member Washington Home Share.

Is Shared Housing for Me?
Families, Couples and Singles have lost their homes, and many of the working middle class with good jobs but damaged  credit scores have renting as their only option. Consequently, shared housing is now becoming a viable temporary solution.  While not able to afford rents upwards of $1,500 per month plus deposits for a 3-bedroom home, renting a room for $400 to $550 including utilities, is now attainable, and practical as a means to save and rebuild finances in a shared housing environment.

Home sharing does work, although screening roommates is a process not to be taken lightly. With diligence, after interviewing prospective roommates, home sharing can be a win-win situation for the owner of the home and the new roommates. There are many Roommate pairing Websites that maintain a directory of available homes, apartments and rooms for rent. Here at Washington Home Share, we offer free resources to share options and solutions for your affordable housing needs.

What is your Eco-Housing Solution?
We pattern our group around an eco-village concept of shared housing expenses, use of renewable energy to reduce utility costs and voluntary use of our organic  garden for growing vegetables and fruits. We offer free-training for roommates that are interested in learning more about renewable energy, solar & wind power, LED Lighting and sustainable construction and design. Our group is listed in the directory of the Intentional Communities Website found at
at http://www.ic.org/ Our long term goal is the acquisition and construction of shared housing units that will allow families and individuals to have a safe and supportive environment to live, work, acquire skills in the field of renewable energy and sustainable construction while rebuilding their  personal finances. An ownership program is integrated into our vision for a successful transition from shared housing to home ownership.

What is the meaning of Shared Housing?Intentional Communities - "It Takes a Village to Raise a Child".
Our method of stretching your housing dollars is to join together with other potential individuals and families and acquire housing with pooled resources. Each family having their own private bedroom and private or shared bathroom. Many intentional communities, are made up of individuals and families that also share  common interests and goals. Our newly formed group for the Tacoma-Pierce County area fosters this sense of community and nurturing environment.

What is an "Intentional Community"?
An "intentional community" is a group of people who have chosen to live together with a common purpose, working cooperatively to create a lifestyle that reflects their shared core values. The people may live together on a piece of rural land, in a suburban home, or in an urban neighborhood, and they may share a single residence or live in a cluster of dwellings.
The definition  of intentional communities spans a wide variety of groups, including (but not limited to) communes, ecovillages, student cooperatives, land co-ops, cohousing groups, monasteries and ashrams, kibbutzim, and farming collectives. Although quite diverse in philosophy and lifestyle, each of these groups places a high priority on fostering a sense of community--a feeling of belonging and mutual support that is increasingly hard to find in mainstream Western society.

This term was coined in the 1940s by the original Fellowship of Intentional Communities a precursor to the current Fellowship for Intentional Community. More information can be found on the Intentional Communities website at http://www.ic.org/ To join our group for shared housing solutions in Washington State please email us at : wahomeshare@ gmail.com  Your participation is welcomed and encouraged. Intentional Communities, such as Washington Home Share, only become a success when individuals, like yourself, take an active role and participate in the formation of the core "community".
